Description
Many topics students will encounter in Middle School are related to proportional thinking. For students with dyscalculia this is one of the most difficult concepts to master! Imagine it is already difficult for you to think about multiplying or dividing one quantity, for proportional thinking you have to juggle two quantities that change at the same time while thinking about what is the connection between the two? So we need to help them build up this concept from the ground. Starting where a combination of two quantities makes sense to them using everyday experiences and pictures. That’s why I suggest working through the first page even if your students may regularly work on a higher level, it will also boost their confidence and send the message that math makes sense and is all around us. You can include your own examples, like from common recipes and even ask your students to come up with examples. Have fun and let us know your experience with this activity.
